Congratulations to MMSC's Bobby Farrell and UVM's Lyndee Jenowiak for winning today's races on Main Street.
Also congrats to Brad Farrell and Cat Mullin for bringing home the George Tormey Series titles!
It was a gorgeous, but bitterly cold day, so we owe all our hardworking volunteers and staff a big thanks.
Official results will be posted soon, but here are some of the other highlights.
On the women's side, UVM swept the top four spots - looking good for next week's Carnival races (Friday-GS, Sat.-SL). Cat Mullin was the top J2 finishing 7th, Mackenzie Young was 12th and Jordan Leach was 14th.
Behind Bobby Farrell was Erik Gilbert of UVM (and formerly MMSC). Tucker Marshall was third and Ryan Cochran-Siegle blazed to fourth. Jim Ryan was 9th, Robby Kelley 12th, Talor Wunsch 14th, Kris Hopkins 16th, Brad Farrell 18th, Ben Deflavio 19th, Dustin Marin 20th and Chris Keating 22nd.
A tough, technical second run set brought out the best in MMSC!

It was a great day up there on Main Street today for the men's Eastern Cup slalom. Thanks to all the hard work and effort from our volunteers and staff.
Even though Igor said the snow was a bit too soft, the races went off well and it was exciting to see people laying it all out there.
Today's winner was UVM's David Donaldson. He came from behind to steal the win from first-run leader Andrew Wagner. Erik Gilbert a Cat and former MMSC skier was second in the first run and moved back to 7th overall in the standings. Next up for local favorites was Robby Kelley in 10th - he had a solid second run to move him up in run two.
Bobby Farrell was 15th and Taylor Wunsch 24th - you can check out the official results here.

Eastern Cups start tomorrow

After this weekend’s college carnival at Smugglers’ Notch, men’s Eastern Cups will are Main Street bound.

Sunday and Monday, men will race two slaloms at Stowe and women will compete at Smuggs.
Because of the carnival, many top-level racers will make starts at Stowe and several of our own athletes will also race.

Conditions on the hill are the best they've been. We blew snow at the beginning of the week, groomed it out and it's set up nicely. Perfect for racing. Today is a gorgeous blue-bird day - you should come up and check it out.

Spectators can easily reach the race finish by parking in the Big Spruce lot and taking a short walk to the venue. Races both days will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The two-day series is the second set of starts this season at the Eastern Cup level.

Among the starters for MMSC at Stowe will be Ryan Cochran-Siegle, Bobby Farrell, Jim Ryan, Chris Hopkins, Mark Grunde, Brad Farrell, Travis Kuster, Ben DeFlavio, Dustin Martin and Taylor Wunsch.

Cochran-Siegle, a second-year J2, was fifth in a December Eastern Cup slalom at Sunday River, and recently placed second in an FIS super-G at Okemo. Bobby Farrell was fourth in a recent Eastern Cup giant slalom, and MMSC coach Scott Moriarty said Farrell has been coming on strong in slalom. Taylor Wunsch had back-to-back top 30 finishes at Nor Am slaloms in Sunday River, Maine, two weeks ago.

“The whole group is skiing well. We have a couple of guys who should be in the mix and some dark horses as well,” coach Scott Moriarty said.

As for college skiers who will race, keep an eye on UVM’s David Donaldson, Erik Gilbert and Kevin Drury, all top finishers in last week’s opening college carnival slalom at Whiteface. UVM coach Billy Reichelt said the whole “Cat crew” will start Sunday’s race.

Cat Mullin wins Pico slalom

Cat Mullin started the new year off in style by taking the win at Sunday's George Tormey Series slalom at Pico.
Cat, now a second year J2, was the first-run leader - over a half-second ahead of Ali Spencer, who finished second overall. Cat had the second-fastest second run, but still pulled off the overall win by over a second.
Way to go Cat!

More podiums for MMSC
In the men's race Brad Farrell and Ben Deflavio skied to second and third overall respectively. Brad was the first-run leader, but gave up just a hair too much time in run two for Sandy Vietze to nab the win by .19 seconds.

It was a great day for MMSC!

MMSC athletes off to a strong start

Kris Hopkins and Bobby Farrell, are off to a fast start this season occupying the top two spots in the state's Vermont Cup race series.

Jordan Leach leads the girls' from MMSC in seventh place.

During the first Vermont Cup giant slalom at Stratton, MMSC boys took the top five spots.

"It's exciting we've got a strong crop of guys this year. They're looking good," coach Scott Moriarty said.

Brad also finished fourth in an FIS giant slalom at Sugarloaf. After winning the first run, he slipped to fourth behind leader Hig Roberts of Burke Mountain Academy.

In the same Eastern Cup series, MMSC's Ryan Cochran-Siegle, finished sixth in the opening slalom. Ryan, 17, led his age group by well over a second in the overall standings.

At FIS Development races in Attitash last week, Dan Bak, finished 11th in a giant slalom. He moved up from the 61st start position to score his best discipline result so far. Results here.

Local athletes headed for Nor-Ams

In line with what Mo said about the group of racers at the ski club this season, four skiers are headed to Nor-Ams this week at Sugarloaf, Maine.

Bobby Farrell, Ryan Cochran-Siegel, Taylor Wunsch and Dustin Martin will be racing.

MMSC J3s dominate the Stan & Dan

The results looked a little bit like they do at times for the Austrians after the Stan & Dan slalom at Attitash on New Year's Day. Five of the top 10 finishers were MMSC skiers.

Angie Duke, a second-year three, won with a combined time of 1:33.03 and Stowe's Ryan Susslin was second in 1:35.81. Not far behind, were Reed Carpenter in 6th (1:38.07), Calvin Dixon in 8th (1:40.36) and Ellis Grubman in 10th place (1:41.02).

In the girls' race, Linley Shaw was third and Sophia Leiter was fifth. MMSC racer Alita Rogers won the first run, but was disqualified in the second after straddling a gate.

Derby compromised

As many of you know, the Stowe Derby is one of MMSC's biggest money-raising events of the year. A Stowe Select Board decision this week, though has created a bit of a stir. A concern for pedestrian safety led to a decision to plow a section of the Rec path, which is also part of the historic Stowe Derby course.

A bunch of interested people are busy trying to come up with a good solution, to make sure the course is in good condition come late Feb.

Snow. Finally!

We've been waiting a long time for the season's first significant snow and it finally arrived Friday night. The mountain reported 18 inches at the top and six at the base of Mt. Mansfield. Right now, the sun is out and the mountain is still covered - the guns are going too. Things are looking up.
Stowe is slated to open on Friday, Dec. 4! The forecast through the week looks cold at night with highs in the 30s during the day, which will help snowmaking efforts. Blow, baby, blow!r
Many of our athletes are training in Nakiska, where early reports from the coaches are good. The conditions will be good for training, helping to give them the needed mileage to start the season off with a bang.
If you haven't seen the coverage of the club in this week's Stowe Reporter, there's a big photo spread of the snowboarding crew, who gathered up a bunch of snow and hit some rails. Way to make the best of the slow start to the season!

Now that you've all done the 2 or 5-mile run, you'll be well prepared for the Main Street Scramble set for 9 a.m. this Sunday, November 1 - part of our annual Open House. Read the previous post for details.

As the 2010 ski season nears, the Club is planning an open house for junior programs on Sunday, November 1.

The festivities begin with an uphill foot race/hike up Main Street at 9 a.m.

The race/hike will be a great way to celebrate our new training and race hill and a good test of how strong our legs are with winter right around the corner!

All members and athletes enrolled in junior programs are encouraged to participate! It's free and prizes will be awarded to the fastest in each group. A club BBQ will follow the race, where coaches, new and returning, from each age group will have a chance to meet up with parents and athletes.

The Club will also hold a member consignment sale for used skis and clothes and there will be a tuning clinic with Edgewise Elite Ski Service. Skis and clothes can be consigned Saturday between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. with 20 percent of the sale price benefiting junior programs. For more information on the sale contact Eric Smith, 760-1099.

It's shaping up to be a great season and we'll look forward to getting together before the lifts start turning!

MMSC welcomes Harlow as new J3 coach

The Club is happy to welcome Christopher "Topher" Harlow as our new head J3 coach.

He will lead an experienced staff of coaches, directing daily training and maintaining communication between parents and athletes.

Harlow was head ski coach last year at Plymouth (N.H.) State University, his alma mater; he was assistant coach for two years before that. Last winter, his men’s team won the Eastern Regional combined Alpine championship, and the men’s and women’s alpine teams both finished fourth overall at the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association national championships.

He's worked extensively with junior racers as a coach at the U.S. Elite Camps at Mt. Hood and Copper Mountain for the past three years.

Harlow was a seven-time All-American ski racer in college. He was runner-up in the combined at the Eastern Regional Championships in 2004 and placed third in the combined in 2006.

“We are really excited to welcome Topher to our coaching staff,” said MMSC athletic director Chip Knight. “He's had coaching success within the team structure of college skiing, personal experience competing at a high level, and displays a heartfelt love of the sport — all of which will be valuable attributes for leading our J3 program.”

MMSC Seeks J3 Coach

For all those who haven't heard, Tom Silva, our veteran J3 coach, has decided to leave his position. The club will not be the same without him, as his presence and hard work has been a true staple of the programs here. Tom's formed countless young ski racers - we'll miss you, Tom!

Look in next week's Stowe Reporter for an article about Tom in the Sports section.

In the meantime, the club needs to fill some shoes. Please pass the information below along to qualified and energetic people who may be interested:

Mount Mansfield Ski Club in Stowe, VT seeks an experienced, energetic, and highly organized individual to run its J3 program. The qualified person will have at least 3 years of coaching experience, preferably in a leadership role, and will have ski raced at a high level of competition. Duties include managing a large group of athletes as well as supervision of assistant coaches, planning and implementation of on-snow and dry-land training, organizing all travel logistics, and maintaining critical lines of communication. This is a full-time seasonal position, and pay will be commensurate with experience.

Stowe Derby pins make comeback

In 2009, parts of Stowe Derby history are making a comeback. This year, like in the days of the first races, buttons will be awarded to the Derby's top skiers.

Pascale Savard, the race's organizer said a company in Burlington is producing the pins which are sponsored by none other than Allan’s Coppock Sports Precision Timing. Coppock fully endorsed the idea after seeing a mock up of the pin design.

The timing guru liked the idea so much that he also came up with a formula which we believe will work perfectly for the 64th edition of the legendary downhill, cross-country ski race on February 22, 2009. Here's how this will work. The Gold pin will be awarded to racers skiing at the winner’s time plus 10%, the Silver at 20% and the Bronze at 30%. According to calculations here is how many medals would have been handed out in 2008. Skate - Gold 15, Silver 26 and Bronze 34 - a total of 75 medals. Classic - Gold 5, Silver 15 and Bronze 9 - a total of 29 medals.

Erling Strom, one of the races founders couldn’t have summed it up any better.

"A hard earned button, however small it may be, is of ever so much more value to a skier than the hundreds he can buy. I should like to see our Derby button develop into one of the most cherished possessions of an American skier, and one he can proudly display wherever skiers congregate".

Nakiska update: training with Bode Miller

It was an exciting day on the hill yesterday for the MMSC athletes in Nakiska - they got to train with Bode Miller! That's right the defending overall World Cup champion was on course with our athletes.
Needless to say, everyone was very excited to have such a great opportunity. It's one thing to get to watch him ski, but then to be able to jump in the same course as him is great experience for our athletes.
Miller was in the area dialing it in before the World Cup downhill at Lake Louise, which takes place this weekend.
Today, the kids have the day off and the camp is going to watch the first training run.

A safer hill is on the way!

This week the club was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kelly Brush Foundation to enhance our new racing and training venue - Main Street - right out the club's back door on Big Spruce.
The money will be used to purchase state-of-the-art safety fencing to line the new race hill.
Athlete safety is a top priority for us and we're very grateful to the Brush Foundation for their support toward our goal of making our facility one of the best and safest in the country.
This year alone, the Kelly Brush Foundation has awarded over $20,000 in grants to clubs around the country as they continue to lead the way making safety improvements in the sport. Aspen Valley Ski Club also received a $10,000 grant for safety fencing, GMVS has received $2,500 and Middlebury's ski team was awarded $1,000 for safety equipment.
We'd like to extend a huge and warm thank you to the Brush Foundation for their generosity and pioneering work!

MMSC 75th Anniversary poster for sale

Wow! What a kickin' poster we have to commemorate 75 years of ski racing success.

Much of the effort should be credited to Chess Brownell, who oversaw the design and logistics of getting the posters ready for our big anniversary season.

The posters are sized 18 x 24 inches and are available for sale at the club and at Edgewise in Stowe. All proceeds benefit MMEFI.

custom plaque laminated by Coco's frame shop in Stowe - $70 (available three weeks from purchase date).
