A Little History About MMSC
The Mt. Mansfield Ski Club was founded in the 1920's and incorporated in 1934 as a non-profit, non-promotional organization whose purpose was to provide, maintain, and improve skiing facilities on the eastern side of Mt. Mansfield, by a group of people who enjoyed skiing there. Their combined efforts and enthusiasm were the catalyst to planned skiing development on Mt. Mansfield. This group of people also setup and ran the ski patrol and the ski school before the Mt. Mansfield Company was formed.
The best access to the top of the mountain, before any lifts were built, was a hike through Ranch Valley and up the newly cut Bruce Trail or the Toll Road. Usually the maximum runs in a day was two, but on occasion someone was seen resting at Ranch Camp, original home of MMSC, before they ascended for their third run of the day.
Spurred on by the dedication and talents of Sepp Ruschp and CV Starr, MMSC grew into an amateur ski organization which served as the official sponsor of sanctioned competitive events. MMSC's Junior Skiing Program began in 1951 as an after school activity for children with an interest in skiing. The Junior Program has grown each year, now offering ski racing, snowboarding and freestyle coaching to over 220 young athletes.
While ski and snowboard competition is a major focus of our club, we also invite recreational skiers and riders to become an active part of our fun organization. General Membership allows you full access to our private ski-in, ski-out clubhouse at the base of Big Spruce, discounts on Stowe lift tickets, discounts at shops, restaurants, and lodging properties, as well as an open invitation to many fun and exciting outings and get-togethers such as barbecues and ski trips.
